Incoming Students

The following scholarships are awarded to students entering their first year at Upstate Medical University's College of Medicine. Recipients are selected based upon a variety of criteria and will be notified from the Executive Director if selected. Students need not apply or create a profile on our website to be eligible.

George J. Buchholtz, MD '52 Scholarship

Amount: Full or partial tuition - multiple awards
Criteria: Helps to support the Medical Alumni Scholars awards, which provides full or partial tution to outstanding students identified by the Admissions Committee.

Carol Kavanagh and Class of 1973 Scholarship

Amount: $2,400
Criteria: Incoming medical student in the top 25% of their class with financial need.

Alphonse A. Maffeo, MD '72 Scholarship

Amount: $1,100
Criteria: Incoming medical student with financial need.

B. Dale Magee, MD '75 Scholarship

Amount: $3,400
Criteria: Incoming medical student who is first generation in their family to attend college with financial need. This award is recognized annually for the four years the student attends Upstate Medical University.

Medical Alumni Scholars

Amount: Full or partial tuition - multiple awards
Criteria: The Medical Alumni Foundation supports full or partial tuition payments for outstanding students identified by the Admissions Committee and Upstate Medical University. These awards are recognized annually.

Onondaga County Medical Society Medical Student Scholarships

Amount: $5,500 – multiple awards
Criteria: Incoming medical students who graduated from an Onondaga County High School and who have a desire to pursue a career practicing medicine in Onondaga County. This award is recognized annually for the four years each student attends Upstate Medical University.

The Setnor Family Endowed Scholarship

Amount: $38,000 – 1 award
Criteria: Incoming medical students in the top 50% of their undergraduate class with financial need.

Ralph Stevens, MD '81 Madison-Oneida County Scholarship
Apply Online
Amount: $1,000 per year for up to four years – multiple awards
Criteria: Incoming MS I, MSII, or MSIII College of Medicine students, who have lived or studied in Madison or Oneida County. Preference is given to students intending a career in primary care, and intending to practice in CNY
Materials: 1) Submit a few short paragraphs about your connections to Central NY, and your career plans for residency and after.

Criteria: Incoming medical students with financial need. Preference given to students who are the first generation in their family to attend college and are foreign-born.
