2019 Scholarships

It is important to note the following dates will indicate when your specific "class ranking" will be determined for those scholarships which require you to be in a certain % class ranking. To learn your "current" class ranking contact the Registrar's Office. Apply, apply!

MS1's final class ranking will be based on their status as of: May 31, 2019.
MS2's final class ranking will be based on their status as of: March 22, 2019.
MS3's final class ranking will be based on their status as of: June 27, 2019.

Criteria:  MS I, II, or III. Students in the top 50% of their class with financial need. Students should be willing to help support the Medical Alumni Foundation with a similar scholarship when they are financially secure.

Student Citizen Awards

Amount: $1,000 – (8) eight awards
Criteria: MS I, II, or III. Students who have distinguished themselves as leaders and volunteers in the life of the Upstate campus and the greater Syracuse area.
Materials: CV and an Essay: Select (1) activity or experience and write a brief essay describing how your involvement has had an impact on your life. Also illustrate how you feel this activity will influence you as a practicing physician during your career in medicine.

The Friendship Scholarship in Honor of Ernest Found, MD '80, in Memory of his wife, Ellyn Slocum Found, and his daughter, Caroline Slocum Found

Criteria: MS I, II, or III. Students in the top 50% of their class with financial need who have demonstrated a passion for outreach, civic involvement, and/or humanitarian work.

Medical Alumni Foundation Founders Scholarship

Criteria: MS I, II, or III. Students in the top 50% of their class who have exhibited leadership qualities while in medical school and have potential for further involvement with Upstate Medical University upon graduation. Child of an alumnus is a plus, but not mandatory. 
Materials: CV and a personal statement describing how your leadership qualities have had a positive impact at the College of Medicine and how you plan on remaining engaged with your alma mater after graduation.

Criteria: Established to honor the memory of Dr. Keating who was dean of Student Affairs, this award is presented to a student from any of the four Upstate colleges who exemplifies the character and leadership of Dr. Keating. See bio for additional information.

Location Based Scholarships

Edward F. Higgins, MD '78 Scholarship

Criteria: MS I, II, or III. Students in the top 50% of their class with financial need. Students must be from or currently residing in Cortland County, NY.
Materials: Submit a personal statement on why you chose a career in medicine.

Ralph Stevens, MD '81 Madison-Oneida County Scholarship

Amount: $1,000 per year for up to four years – multiple awards
Criteria: Incoming MS I, MSII, or MSIII College of Medicine students, who have lived or studied in Madison or Oneida County. Preference is given to students intending a career in primary care, and intending to practice in CNY
Materials: 1) Submit a few short paragraphs about your connections to Central NY, and your career plans for residency and after.

Marc A. Subik, MD '79 Family Scholarship

Criteria: MS I, II, or III. Students who were born and raised, or who spent significant time in the following counties in the Adirondack region of NY: Clinton, Essex, Franklin, Fulton, Hamilton, Herkimer, Saratoga, St. Lawrence, Warren.

Criteria: MS I or II. Students in the top 50% of their class who actively combine creative arts, such as music, drama, painting, drawing, photography, etc., with the practice of medicine.

Sarah Loguen Fraser Bio
Amount: $6,000
Criteria: MS I or II. Students with financial need who hold similar ideals to Dr. Sarah Loguen Fraser - must have a genuine desire to provide service to the medically under-served. Candidates should have demonstrated leadership qualities and willingness to give of themselves through volunteer work or other efforts that make a positive impact on the lives of others.
