2017 Scholarship Deadline: March 31, 2017

  • First-Time Visitor?  You must have a Medical Alumni username and password to use the "apply online" feature on our website.  Create your login here through the "New User Registration" form.  It usually takes 1-2 business days for us to process your request.
  • Essays:  Essays should be typed, single or double-spaced, and no longer than one page in length.  Please put the scholarship and your name on the top.
  • Unofficial Transcripts:  Unofficial transcripts can be obtained through your "My Upstate" page.  Go to: My Upstate > Student Academic Information > Academic Transcript.  Right click to choose print and change the destination from printer to "Save as PDF".  Then simply attach it to the scholarship of your choosing.  Please note that we cannot accept unofficial transcripts that have been saved or printed as a word document.  We must receive a copy in its original form.  It is recommended that you save the document as a PDF or similar file.

Criteria: MS I, II or III.  Students in top 50% of their class with financial need.

Schein Family Scholarship

Frederick W. Sloan, MD ’74 Scholarship

Student Citizen Awards

Amount: $1,000 – multiple awards
Criteria: MS I, II, or III.  Students who have distinguished themselves as leaders and volunteers in the life of the Upstate campus and the greater Syracuse area.
Materials: 1) Submit a list of community activities or experiences you have been involved with during your time at Upstate. 2) Select one and write a brief essay describing how your involvement has had an impact on your life. Also illustrate how you feel this activity will influence you as a practicing physician during your career in medicine.

The Friendship Scholarship in Honor of Ernest Found, MD '80, in Memory of his wife, Ellyn Slocum Found, and his daughter, Caroline Slocum Found

Criteria: MS I, II, or III.  Students who have demonstrated a passion for outreach, civic involvement, and/or humanitarian work in the top 50% of their class with financial need.

Medical Alumni Foundation Founders Scholarship

Amount: $1,200
Criteria: MS I, II, or III.  Students in the top 50% of their class who have exhibited leadership qualities while in medical school and have potential for further involvement with Upstate Medical University upon graduation.  Child of an alumnus is a plus, but not mandatory. 
Materials: 1) Submit a personal statement describing how your leadership qualities have had a positive impact at the College of Medicine and how you plan on remaining engaged with your alma mater after graduation. 2) Submit unofficial transcript.

E. Gregory Keating, PhD Memorial Scholarship

**Students need not apply.
Dr. E. Gregory Keating's Bio
Amount: $550
Criteria: Established to honor the memory of Dr. Keating who was dean of Student Affairs, this award is presented to a student from any of the four Upstate colleges who exemplifies the character of Dr. Keating.  See bio for additional information.

Location Based Scholarships

Edward F. Higgins, MD '78 Scholarship

Criteria: MS I, II, or III.  Students from or currently residing in Cortland County, in the top 50% of their class with financial need.
Materials: Submit a personal statement on why you chose a career in medicine.

Susan B. Stearns, PhD Scholarship for International Travel

Marc A. Subik, MD '79 Family Scholarship

Criteria: MS I, II, or III.  Students who were born and raised, or who spent signifant time in the following counties in the Adirondack region of NY: Clinton, Essex, Franklin, Fulton, Hamilton, Herkimer, Saratoga, St. Lawrence, Warren.
Materials: 1) Submit a short paragraph (no longer than 150 words) outlining your career goals. 2) Submit unofficial transcript.

Criteria: MS I or II.  Students in the top 50% of their class who actively combine creative arts, such as music, drama, painting, drawing, photography, etc., with the practice of medicine.
Materials: 1) Submit a short essay describing how your pursuit of the creative arts has linked to your career in medicine. 2) Submit examples of your artistry. 3) Submit unofficial transcript.

Kasten Aker Family Scholarship

Criteria: MS I, II, or III students with outstanding qualities.

Esther and Monroe Richman, MD ’55 Scholarship

Sarah Loguen Fraser, MD, Class of 1876 Scholarship

Amount: $5,100
Criteria: MS I or II.  Students in the top 50% of their class with financial need who hold similar ideals to Dr. Sarah Loguen Fraser - must have a genuine desire to provide service to the medically under-served. Candidates should have demonstrated leadership qualities and willingness to give of themselves through volunteer work or other efforts that make a positive impact on the lives of others.
